Rome had a very advanced government with checks and balances and power sharing. The senate made laws and controlled the government. Each year, the senators nominated two consuls from the patricians, who supervised the government and controlled the army. In times of war, the Senate would appoint a dictator to lead the army. The Romans also had a strong foreign policy, which prevented outside attacks. Lastly, the structure of Rome's government was so advanced, our form of government was based on it.
